Premium Template & Blocks License
Scope: This agreement governs the use of HugoBlox downloadable assets (Premium Blocks, Templates, and Bundles). If you are looking for terms regarding our SaaS hosting or Cloud Pro plans, please refer to our Terms of Service.
By downloading or using these products, you agree to the terms below.
📜 TL;DR (The Plain English Summary)
- ✅ Unlimited Projects: Use the Blocks and Templates to create unlimited websites, SaaS apps, or commercial projects for yourself or your clients.
- ✅ Public Repos for SITES: You can make the source code of your actual website public (e.g., your personal blog on GitHub), provided it is a genuine site and not just a re-distribution of our files.
- ❌ No Public “Starters”: You cannot host the unmodified template or blocks in a public repository for others to clone. If the repo’s primary value is just our files, it must be private.
- ❌ No Re-Selling: You cannot use our templates to build a competing theme, a UI kit, or a “website builder” to sell or give away.
- ❌ Don’t Share the License: A Personal License is for you alone. You cannot share the raw template files with friends or other developers.
This summary is for convenience only; the full license agreement below is the binding legal document.
Personal License
HugoBlox grants you an on-going, non-exclusive license to use the Blocks, Templates, and Assets.
The license grants permission to one individual (the Licensee) to access and use the Blocks, Templates, and Assets.
You can:
- Use the Blocks, Templates, and Assets to create unlimited End Products.
- Modify the Blocks and Templates to create derivative blocks and templates. Those components and templates are subject to this license.
- Use the Blocks, Templates, and Assets to create unlimited End Products for unlimited Clients.
- Use the Blocks, Templates, and Assets to create End Products where the End Product is sold to End Users.
- Use the Blocks, Templates, and Assets to create End Products that are open source and freely available to End Users (provided the primary purpose is not the redistribution of the Blocks/Templates themselves).
You cannot:
- Use the Blocks, Templates, or Assets to create End Products that are designed to allow an End User to build their own End Products using the Blocks, Templates, Assets, or derivatives of them.
- Re-distribute the Blocks, Templates, Assets, or derivatives of them separately from an End Product, neither in code nor as design assets.
- Share your access to the Blocks, Templates, or Assets with any other individuals.
- Use the Blocks, Templates, or Assets to produce anything that may be deemed by HugoBlox, in their sole and absolute discretion, to be competitive or in conflict with the business of HugoBlox.
Example Usage (Personal)
Allowed:
- Creating a personal website by yourself.
- Creating a website or web application for a client that will be owned by that client.
- Creating a commercial SaaS application (like an invoicing app) where end users pay a fee to use the application.
- Creating a commercial self-hosted web application that is sold to end users for a one-time fee.
- Creating a web application where the primary purpose is clearly not to simply re-distribute the blocks or templates (like a conference organization app that uses them for its UI) that is free and open source, where the source code is publicly available.
Not Allowed:
- Creating a repository of your favorite HugoBlox blocks or templates (or derivatives of them) and publishing it publicly.
- Creating a UI library using HugoBlox blocks or templates and making it available either for sale or for free.
- Creating a “website builder” project where end users can build their own websites using blocks, templates, or assets included with or derived from HugoBlox.
- Creating a theme, template, or project starter kit using the blocks, templates, or assets and making it available either for sale or for free.
- Converting a HugoBlox template to another framework (e.g., converting a Hugo template to React) and making it available either for sale or for free.
ℹ️ Important: Public Repository Policy
We love Open Source and we want you to be able to show off your code! However, there is a difference between sharing your website and distributing our product.
- Allowed: A public GitHub repository for your personal blog, portfolio, or company site that happens to include the HugoBlox template files required to build it.
- Not Allowed: A public GitHub repository that is simply a copy of the HugoBlox Premium template (unmodified or slightly modified) intended for others to clone and use as a starter.
The Rule of Thumb: If the primary value of your repository is your content, it’s fine. If the primary value of your repository is our template, it’s not allowed.
